What does vinyl pressing cost in Canada?
Short answer: pressing 100 records costs $1,500 to $4,000 CAD all in. A 300 copy run lands between $1,500 and $4,500. At 500 copies and up, per-record cost drops while total budget climbs to $5,000 to $8,000 for a complete product. These ranges come from Canadian plants' own published price guides. Price by quantity
| Quantity | Estimated total (CAD) | Per record | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | $1,500 to $4,000 | $15 to $40 | First pressing, limited run |
| 300 | $1,500 to $4,500 | $5 to $15 | The most common indie run |
| 500 | $5,000 to $6,500 | $10 to $13 | Labels with store distribution |
| 1,000 | $6,000 to $8,000 | $6 to $8 | Touring, catalogue, established sales |
What drives the price up
- Weight: 180 g costs more than 140 g, and a well pressed 140 g sounds just as good for most projects.
- Color: black is cheapest. Color, marble and splatter add a per-record premium, and eco options like Bio-Vinyl run about 10 to 15 percent more.
- Jacket: single, then gatefold, then special finishes. The jacket can cost as much as the record.
- Test pressings: quality control before the full run. Keep them on a first pressing.
- Turnaround: standard runs take 8 to 12 weeks. Express, where offered, runs 4 to 6 weeks and costs more.
A realistic 300 copy budget
Black 12 inch record, single color jacket, test pressings included: pressing and packaging $1,700 to $3,000, vinyl mastering and cutting if not included $300 to $600, barcode and fees about $25 to $100, shipping $150 to $400. Total to plan: about $2,200 to $4,100. At $30 a record sold direct, break even lands around 75 to 135 copies sold.
